In a follow up to last week’s post, here’s a little more insight into how Root Candles is helping the Bees: a message from our Bee Culture Magazine Editor, Kim Flottum.

“The A. I. Root Company’s Pollinator Friendly garden program is being staged over several years, and in several stages. In 2012 we installed a small planting, and four working beehives on the front lawn of A. I. Root’s home on the south side of Liberty Street, and at the same time, planted the tree lawn in front of the Corporate Office on the North side of the street with several varieties of pollinator friendly plants, including cone flowers, sedums, several varieties of thymes, bee balm and lavender. Our soil here doesn’t seem to favor another plant…Lupines…and they didn’t survive our poorly drained soil, shady location and hot temperatures. They are going to be replaced this year with more of the cone flowers, which are thriving. Watch as we complete the next three stages over the next few years in front of our store, and behind our parking lot of the North Office building. We firmly believe that our pollinators are struggling and are doing what we can to help them with enough good food, all the time”

Spring is in full bloom and so is our Pollinator Garden! Located on the North and West sides of the Retail Store, just outside our corporate offices and the Root Homestead.

Take a walk through our herbal garden full of lavender, sage, hosta, bee balm, and a variety of other bee friendly plants. Or wander back in time along the Root Homestead, awing at the eye popping colors of red, yellow, and pink. Breathe in the fragrant floral scent of our red and yellow roses. Stop and admire our 150 year old rhododendron’s that our founder, A. I. Root raised with his own green-thumb. This eye catching and awe-inspiring garden is sure to please any lover of Earth’s great beauty.

Join us June 29th for the Medina Country Design Committee’s Garden Tour for an afternoon of meandering through charming Medina gardens.

We’ve captured the aromatic essence of the garden and created candles pleasing to your senses. Bring the scents of a pollinator garden into your own home with our favorite floral and herb fragrances like, English Lavender, Garden Mint, and Hosta.

One table, 3 cheery views! Revamping an accent table can freshen up a room and bring it to life!

The secret is to keep it simple! Stay neutral or add a pop of color using pillar candles or candle holders. Swap out the colors as the season changes or add a bouquet of fresh flowers as they bloom. Make a statement by displaying a unique decorative bowl. If no kids or pets are roaming around, place an eye popper under the table.

Tealights in a holder offer a chance to show off your personality and when lit, add a soft glow to the room. You can always find fabulous DIY tealight holder ideas on our Pinterest page.

We are SO excited about our First Annual Honey Bee Festival!!! A fun-filled weekend celebrating the busy bee and her hard work (that’s right, the worker bee is female!!) with the help from our friends, the Medina Country Beekeepers.

We kick off the event with Gourmet Honey Tasting all day in our Gourmet Cafe! Sample different varieties of honey and learn proper honey pairings.

Saturday, May 4th we are focusing on Everything Out of the Hive! Activities are planned throughout our expansive 20,000 square foot store, from 10:00AM-5:00PM . Join us for live honey bee demonstrations, delectable gourmet food tasting (all made with honey), honey tasting and honey pairings! Learn how to make jams and jellies using honey, creamed honey, and beeswax based lip balm and lotions. Queenright Colonies will be on sight with beekeeping supplies for purchase. Meet our Bee Culture Magazine Editor, Kim Flottum (the King Bee), as he signs his many books, including his latest: The Honey Connoisseur!

Come back Sunday, May 5th from 1:00PM-3:00PM for Root Family Day with Radio Disney!! The Radio Disney Road Crew will be on-site playing the latest hits from Radio Disney! In addition to music and dancing, learn all about our favorite bug: the honey bee! There will be coloring contests, candle making, and prizes (how do tickets to Cedar Point sound?!). It’ll be a fun-filled day the kiddos will remember!!

Cooking with Sandy is back for the new year and whipping up some tasty delights!!

The Little Bites, Big Flavor Cooking Class kicked off 2013 with a bang! Using gourmet products from Stonewall Kitchen, Davis and Davis, and Rothschild Farm, Sandy created delicious masterpieces that teased the taste buds.

The Tuscan White Beans dish was the favorite of the evening! Here’s how to make it:

Sandy drizzled Tuscan Dipping Oil, from the Davis & Davis gourmet line, over a mix of 2 cans of Great Northern Beans (rinsed and drained), chopped yellow and red peppers (1 each), 1 chopped red onion. She gently stirred the, the oil, beans, peppers, and onions and then added 3 T. of fresh basil and sprinkled crumbled feta cheese on top. Simple, easy, and delicious!

Alright, Wine-lovers! Grab that bag, box, or container of wine corks that you’ve been saving, because we’re getting crafty! We were browsing our pins for some Pinspiration and came upon a picture of a lit candle nestled in a bowl of wine corks. Well, that’s easy, simple- yet elegant, and right up our alley!

Place an unlit candle (jar candle not pillar) in the hurricane first, then arrange the corks around candle, light it and Voila! It’s so quick, it took longer to dig out that bag of wine corks. Of course, there is only one candle perfect for this centerpiece: Pinot Noir.

This elegantly simple centerpiece can go with any decor and stay out all year long. Just another way to enjoy your favorite bottles of wine a little longer! Cheers!

Dinner Tapers made from White House beeswax

Root Candles has a rich history dating back to over 140 years. We began manufacturing bee supplies in 1869 and remain actively engaged in the bee keeping business.

As you may have heard, a few years ago the White House installed a beehive, on the South Lawn. Did you know that our Bee Culture Magazine Editor, Kim Flottum has actively worked with Charlie Brandts, the beekeeper of the White House hive? Kim and Charlie formed a special relationship creating a bountiful hive. As a Thank You, the White House sent Root Candles beeswax from that very hive! We have used this wax to create these beautiful beeswax taper candles!

We have 2 sets of White House Beeswax Tapers to give to 2 very lucky winners! On Facebook, under the comments section of the link to this blog, tell us, in one word, why you are Proud to be American! We will enter all names into a drawing and pick the winner Monday, January 21.

We’re feeling a little beachy today. Perhaps the melting snow and a forecast of warmer weather (60 degrees, in Medina, Ohio, in January?! We’ll take it!) makes us crave hot summer days and longer nights. So we thought it’s a perfect time to introduce another new candle for spring: Seaside Surf! This fresh, ocean-breeze scent fills you with warmth and relaxation and the gorgeous color reflects the pounding surf against the sand. For all you beach lovers, this one is for you!
